This unit is a piece of junk. I bought the Harman because I figured, even if the GPS function has deficiencies, it would be more that compensated by the media playing capabilities of the unit.
My frustration with this crappy excuse for a GPS has reached a climax, and I am officially dumping it today.Pass on this one. I never had a chance to use the media functions because I couldn't get past how lousy the GPS works.
I was wrong. The other frustration was that, despite a nice 4" screen, I still had major problems with the size of the icons and my slightly large fingers not being able to hit the icons I was aiming for.
I'll make this short and sweet. I've used Garmin and Tom Tom in the past, and I had my share of complaints about the particular quirks of those units, but they both blow this thing away.
Aside from being very difficult to follow onscreen, it CONSTANTLY took me to dead ends and roads that don't exist.
It is so simple any child who can read can program a trip with this device. Adding stops to a trip is very east as well. It is also perfect if you have kids and need to keep them entertained - in or out of the car. Worse, I can only charge it while it is on - if you plug it in, it automatically turns on and I cannot turn it off unless I unplug it. If I use it while riding a bike, or in any other circumstance where there is no power I am out of luck. I was right.
Everything about this device is great. I have no complaints so far. ********************************************************************I would like to follow up with a review after using this GPS for a little over six months. The media functionality works exactly as advertised and exactly as I need it to. The screen is big enough to make watching a movie enjoyable.
All of our vehicles now have paperclips onboard. In order to turn it on I have to plug it in, or use a paperclip to hit the reset button. If you miss a turn or need to change directions the alternate route is re-calculated very, very quickly. I can turn it on, but not off, so the battery runs out before I can complete the trip.
As you can imagine, this is a huge inconvenience. I guess I am out of luck. HK should have added a little pocket on the side of the carrying case to hold a paperclip. I highly recommend NOT BUYING ANYTHING FROM THEM.
I had a feeling that the people giving bad reviews were either luddites, technologically challenged, or were expecting way too much from this device. In order to turn it off I have to unplug it. Satellites are locked onto almost instantly. It got to the point that I had to always carry a paperclip with the GPS (to reset the unit). Any company that I do business with that does not even have the decency or common courtesy to reply to repeated attempts to contact them is not a company that I would ever do business with again. If someone else had this happen to them, and they seemed reliable, I would not have purchased anything from them. It is not the end of the world, but it does get annoying once in awhile.Regarding the seller:I contacted the seller over and over agian since the GPS broke and they have not responded at all. I bought this GPS not too long ago and I don't regret it one bit.The GPS works GREAT and is very easy to use.
There are also a plethora of pre-programmed Points of Interest. The unit worked pretty well (more anon) up until about a month and a half ago at which time the power button stopped working. The GPS also began freezing a lot over the last couple months before the power button broke. I wish I had known. Like others I almost didn't buy this device because of others' bad reviews. Drag and drop files from the computer to the SD card (or the device with the SD card inserted via the included usb cable) and quickly transfer any movies and music that you want to bring along for the trip. Very annoying.
When you write emails, Mr. Third, their service is very bad. Their shipping is fast. First, it can not locate the best traffic route and alway let you go much far away. Never buy this brand GPS, Trash. No phone was be received when you call them.
But the replaced GPS is very old (nicks back) and can not work too (keeping locking). It is a very bad GPS. Second, it is very easy to die, such as no signal on the street at all or keep locking and can not open at all. Le will reply you soon and agree replace another one for you.
If all you want is a music shuffle this issue will not affect you.I also live in Michigan where we have a unique road feature we call the Michigan left, this is, as far as I know, unique to Michigan. While it works I have been unable to get the play list to work even after extended e-mails with tech support. The GPS-510 seems to be hit and miss when you need to do a Michigan left. This was something I required due to not being able to hear the GPS over the radio. This GPS believes that once you are on the right road you will stay there until it tells you otherwise.I have found with both GPS units that for local trips you probably know a better way to go, either due to traffic flow or light timings. This is a major issue for me as it makes listening to things like audio books impossible.
The problem is that normally this is on two or more lane roads and being in the wrong lane is a big issue as you can't make a left and need to make a right. The girlfriend's Magellan GPS is more granular for directions, if there is a possibility of you going the wrong way it will tell you where you need to be, to include navigating a clover leaf interchange. I bought this GPS because it does what my girlfriend's doesn't, play music from the SD card while navigating. So, I just plug the head phone jack into my car stereo to reroute the sound. In order to turn left you either go past and make a U-Turn on a small connecting street or go right and do the same, no turns at the actual intersection.
Paid around 160 for this.Pros : Good screen size, Media and Traffic capabilitiesCons : Couldnt get map icons to work No user manual at all in the pkg(couldnt find it online too) Screen too sensitive to touches (double clicks very often) Froze once (had to press the hard reset button) in the first few weeks of usage Takes a min or two to latch on to satellites.
